Rev. Dr. Rodney Thomas Smothers serves as the Pastor of Liberty Grove UMC in Burtonsville, MD. He also serves as Lead Coach for RTS Coaching Associates. During the past thirty-six years of pastoral ministry he has founded new congregations, served as the lead pastor of multicultural, urban and suburban congregations. He formally served as the Director of Evangelism at the General Board of Discipleship, as a Path 1 New Church Development Coach, and Conference Director of Congregational Development for the Baltimore-Washington Conference of the United Methodist Church. As a church leadership consultant, workshop leader and coach, he resources pastors, congregations and denominational leaders in the area of congregational vitality.


Workshop Session 3: Coaching Strategies for Leadership Development in African American Churches
Coaching has emerged as an effective leadership development skill in African American new church starts. As lead pastors develop teams, establish ministry systems, engage new leaders, build community relationships and reach diverse groups of new people, coaching is an excellent tool to accelerate learning and effectiveness. In this workshop you will learn: Biblical Foundations of Coaching; Challenges of Coaching in the African American Community; The 3 Levels of Listening; Communicating and Expanding Vision Through Coaching; and How Powerful Questions Translate to Action.
